Description

Limonium sinuatum 'Forever Moonlight' is a variety of Statice with sinuous leaves, whose flowering displays a beautiful gradient of yellow to cream tones. It is a tender perennial, grown as an annual, prized in floristry for its lightness and very durable inflorescences. Throughout the summer, it produces panicles of tiny paper-like flowers that retain their colour for a long time. Annual statice thrives in sunny, well-drained, light soil that is not too dry in summer.

Limonium sinuatum 'Forever Moonlight' (synonym Statice sinuata), commonly known as Wavy-leaf Sea Lavender, is derived from a Mediterranean herbaceous plant in the Plumbaginaceae family. This bushy species has an upright and somewhat stiff habit. The 'Forever Rose' cultivar forms flowering clumps 70cm tall and 30cm in diameter. The plant develops a dense basal rosette composed of oblong, highly undulate, lanceolate, bright green, deciduous leaves. From July to September, winged floral stems appear, branched and adorned with a few small leaves, which bear clusters measuring 8 to 10cm at their tips, consisting of tiny flowers whose bracts, with a paper-like texture, transition from yellow to light lemon and cream yellow. The flower itself is much more discreet, almost invisible. The flowering is nectariferous. The fruit is a capsule containing a single seed. This plant readily self-seeds in light soil.

Wavy-leaf sea lavender is undoubtedly one of the easiest flowers to dry. Simply cut the longest stems possible, hang them upside down in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place. They retain their colours for a long time, which soften slightly. 'Forever Moonlight' statice also helps lighten up borders alongside more massive blooms (roses, peonies, etc.). Statice can be paired with yarrow and the plumes of Miscanthus, for example.

Planting and care

Sow the 'Forever Moonlight' Statice seeds in February/March in a greenhouse, mini-greenhouse, or heated room, at home, on the surface of good soil and cover with vermiculite or a thin layer of soil. Germination takes 7 to 14 days at 18-24°C.

Transplant the sufficiently developed young plants into trays, spacing them 5cm apart, at a slightly lower temperature. Gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting them in the ground, after the frost, in deep, well-drained soil. Space the plants 30cm apart.

Statice plants are truly easy to grow. They appreciate the sun, well-drained, sandy, and dry soil. They tolerate salt spray and strong winds, making them perfect candidates for coastal gardens. Planting is done in spring, on warmed soil. Once in place, simply remove the faded flowers, as this stimulates the emergence of new flowers. At the end of the season, if you want to try to preserve the Statice, cut back the stems.

Like many Mediterranean plants, statice is highly drought-resistant, but it needs water to flower well in summer. In its native region, it blooms before the arrival of summer drought. This plant does not appreciate humidity, which makes it susceptible to Botrytis, grey mould.
