Description

We're offering you a Collection of three Lithodora diffusa in a harmony of white and blue to enhance rockeries, slopes, borders, and planters in full sun. These spreading undershrubs, commonly known as diffuse Gromwell, are prized for their incredibly bright flowering in May-June. They form loose mats about 20 cm tall that spread over 40 to 50 cm, adorned with small dark green leaves that remain attractive in winter. Plant them in acidic, humus-bearing, and light, moist to dry soil.

The collection consists of:

x 1 Lithodora diffusa 'Heavenly Blue': a variety with intensely gentian blue flowers

x 1 Lithodora diffusa 'Alba': the form of the diffuse Gromwell with pure white flowers

x 1 Lithodora diffusa 'Star': a variety with bicoloured flowers in a light blue and white star pattern.

Plant these Lithodoras in sun in well-drained, light, non-calcareous, even somewhat dry soil in summer. In any case, these shrubs do not tolerate limestone or very clayey and waterlogged soil. A mixture of potting compost and peat will suit them. Do not hesitate to plant them on a mound or in a raised bed (20 cm is sufficient) to promote water drainage. Space the plants 40 cm apart. Ideally, grow the Lithodoras from this collection above a wall, between the stones of a rockery, or on a slope. They are perfect in front of heathers that appreciate the same environments. The yellow flowering of gold baskets as well as the whiteness of Iberis sempervirens will perfectly complement the white and blue of the Gromwells. All these plants will also create a great effect in troughs or wide and low pots.

Planting and care

Like heathers, Lithodora diffusa hate limestone but tolerate poor, sandy soil. They can handle slightly clayey soil as long as it is well-drained by the roots of surrounding trees. Under these conditions, they are very hardy (-20 °C). Water them generously when planting, then regularly during the first few weeks and the first summer if it is very dry. After that, the plants will rely on rainwater.
