Planted in open ground, it was covered in powdery mildew. It was moved and transplanted into a pot where it finally flowered!

Description

Monarda Beauty of Cobham is a floriferous, clump-forming perennial with pretty pale pink flowers from July to September with rose-purple bracts. The 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) long flowers, have an upright upper lip and a lower, more spreading lip divided into three lobes and borne on upright stems. The flowering is nectar-rich and attracts butterflies.

The green-purple, fragrant leaves are decorative and aromatic with the scent of bergamot. They are deciduous, 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6in) long, opposite, lanceolate, and toothed, sometimes hairy underneath and with prominent veins. This very hardy plant can reach 90 cm (35in) high at maturity with a spread of 45 cm (18in).

Monarda is suitable for flower beds, borders, stream banks, and all water features. It is also found in meadows and forests. These flowers are delightful for creating beautiful bouquets. Monarda Beauty of Cobham pairs well with Asters lateriflorus, Campanulas lactiflora, Echinaceas, and other perennial plants. It is worth noting that Monarda Beauty of Cobham contains essential oils similar to those of thyme and tea can be made using its fresh or dried leaves or flowers.

Planting and care

Monarda Beauty Of Cobham thrives in full sun and tolerates light shade. Plant it in fairly rich, light, moist to wet but well-drained soil. It cannot withstand soil drought even for a few days or the slightest trace of salinity in the soil. It also doesn't like competition, so it needs a spacing of 60 cm (24in). Protect Monarda from excessive winter moisture and do not let the soil dry out in summer. Remove faded flower heads and cut back the clump once flowering is finished. Water regularly and generously during the first summer. Water at the base in case of severe summer drought. Monarda is prone to powdery mildew during hot and dry summers. It can also be attacked by slugs and snails in spring.
