Monarda didyma Croftway Pink - Beebalm

Monarda didyma 'Croftway Pink', a hardy variety of bee balm or bergamot. Although not widely used in gardens, it has lovely soft pink flowers all summer. The crushed leaves will transport you with their citrus scent. Beautiful in perennial flower beds.

Bergamot didyma is native to eastern North America and was first used by Native Americans as a medicinal plant. 'Croftway Pink' is a beautiful horticultural variety. The bushy clump can reach 80 cm (32in) high with a spread of 50 cm (20in). The square, purple stems bear fragrant, green, lanceolate leaves with smooth margins, marked with dark green veins. They are arranged opposite each other on the stem. The spider-like flowers develop on a base of purple sepals. During July to September, clusters of soft pink, slender flowers with trailing lips reveal a developed white pistil. Its flowers are loved by insects, especially bees. The flowers are edible and taste like oregano.

Monarda is easy to grow but becomes susceptible to powdery mildew as it ages. It prefers light, humus-bearing, moist or wet soils. It will thrive in a sunny or semi-shaded location.

It is hardy and integrates easily into perennial flower beds and makes beautiful cut flowers. It pairs well with perennial plants such as alstroemerias, daylilies, or comfreys.
