Beautiful growth. Flowered well from the first year. Lovely young plant with its tousled head. Blends well with other plants (classic and Thai basil, roses ...)

Description

Monarda 'Mohawk' is a tall bee balm which is loved for the intensity of its violet-purple flowers crowned with chocolate bracts.

From July to August, it has flowers 5 to 6 cm (2in) in diameter, grouped in terminal whorls. These two-lipped flowers are violet-purple and nectar-rich, attracting bees and butterflies.

The deciduous leaves of Monarda 'Mohawk' are 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3in) long, lanceolate, toothed and green with prominent veins. They are highly aromatic, used for scented sachets and potpourri. When mature Monarda 'Mohawk' forms large clumps, 1.20 to 1.50m (4 to 5ft) tall.

Monarda 'Mohawk' is very hardy and easy to grow and thrives in full sun or partial shade, in any moist, rich, and well-draining soil. Plant it in the background of your garden, a flower meadow, or a mixed border along with lobelias, bellflowers, knotweeds, and grasses.

Planting and care

The Mohawk Bee Balm thrives in full sun and tolerates light shade. Plant it in a fairly rich, light, moist but well-drained soil. It does not tolerate soil drought even for a few days, so do not let the soil dry out in summer, but also protect it from excessive winter moisture. Remove faded flowers to prolong flowering. Cut back the dry clump once it is no longer decorative, in late winter. Bee Balm is prone to powdery mildew during hot and dry summers and can be attacked by slugs and snails in spring.
