Beautiful plant that matches the description. First order placed with you, along with 2 other evening primroses, which went rather well. As for the African Sun, it arrived a bit stunted, which is why I'm giving it 4 stars and I'll explain why: the delivery arrived one day late via DPD, and since it's quite hot at the moment, I think that's largely the problem. Being returned to the DPD agency for several hours doesn't do any good. If it had been delivered on time, I believe the plant would have looked more impressive. Additionally, I think the packaging, although very well made and designed, is a bit too tight, especially for plants whose stems haven't fully lignified yet. As a result, some stems are bent in places, which the plant will likely eventually discard and replace with new ones, but it's not a big issue. On the other hand, the root balls were moist but not soaked, and the roots looked healthy, so I believe all 3 plants will recover. It's clear that you take good care of your plants. For my next order, I'll use a different delivery service to see if it goes more smoothly. Thank you and your impressive catalogue selection.

Description

Oenothera fruticosa 'African Sun' is a low-growing, hardy, vigorous, deciduous perennial with a very long summer flowering period of large very bright yellow flowers mixed with reddish buds which butterflies love. This Evening Primrose opens during the day in full sun and thrives in ordinary soil making it an essential feature of wild and natural gardens! It can also be planted in a pot on the terrace or balcony.

Oenothera fruticosa or Oenothera linearis, commonly known as Evening Primrose, is native to eastern North America and belongs to the Onagraceae family. The African Sun variety produces a rosette of basal leaves which hairy and branched stems rise from, tinged with red and bearing narrow leaves 5 to 12 cm (2 to 5in) long. It is a small plant, 30 cm (12in) in all directions which forms a very floriferous ground cover. From June to October, clusters of more or less flattened cup-shaped flowers, 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) in diameter, bloom during the day. The flower buds are reddish, and the open flowers are a splendid, very bright yellow. The flowers last for a day and perpetually succeed each other. This Evening Primrose attracts many pollinating insects.

This Evening Primrose thrives in full sun in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. It is a trouble-free, undemanding plant which is easy to grow, making it ideal for wild and natural gardens. With its light green foliage, reddish stems and flower buds, and long flowering period of yellow flowers, it is perfect in a rock garden or as a border plant, on a slope, or in a pot or container on a terrace or balcony. It is the perfect companion for Agastaches, Lavenders, Peachleaf Bellflowers, Blue Thistles, Wood Sages, and Scabious. It can also be paired with Russian Sage, California Lilac, or Marshmallow shrubs.

Planting and care

Oenothera fruticosa 'African Sun' is a very easy, low-maintenance, hardy plant which likes sunny exposures and moderately rich, not too dry to moist, well-drained soil. Once well established, it will tolerate drought quite well. Plant in spring, once all risk of frost has passed. Divide the clumps every three years to keep the plants floriferous. Remove faded flowers as they appear to prolong the flowering period, and cut back the clump to ground level in October or November. Evening Primroses are disease-resistant but do not tolerate excessive humidity and show signs of root rot in heavy, moist soil. In heavy and poorly drained soil, improve the drainage with coarse sand and compost when planting.
