More information

The plant produces a brilliant and exceptionally bright flowering, especially when exposed to sunlight. The large campanulate violet-purple flowers, which bloom from June to October, can sometimes cause the very bushy plant to bend under its weight. Although not the hardiest perennial, it can tolerate drought and adapt well to ordinary soil. It is perfect for summer flowerbeds or large containers, and its beautiful flowers also make it an excellent choice as a cut flower.

Description

The 'Gloire de Quatre Rue' hybrid Penstemon displays a brilliant flowering, exceptionally bright under the sun. Its large violet-purple campanulate flowers are open on a deep white throat that captures the light, illuminating the garden from June to October. They are borne by a very bushy plant with semi-evergreen foliage that sometimes bends under their weight. This exceptional perennial is undoubtedly not the hardiest, but it tolerates occasional periods of drought well and can adapt to ordinary soil. It is also an excellent cut flower, perfect in sunny flower beds or large containers.

The 'Gloire de Quatre Rue' hybrid Penstemon is a recent Angevin creation. It is a bushy and woody perennial plant belonging to the scrophulariaceae family, just like foxgloves and snapdragons. Like many hybrid penstemons, it results from cross-breeding several species, most of which originate from Central and North America. This variety forms beautiful dense clumps of 60 cm (24in) in all directions, with branched stems covered in delicate, lanceolate dark green foliage. Its growth is relatively rapid. The flowering extends from June to October, developing at the terminal part of leafy stems. The bicoloured flowers, in the shape of large bell-shaped campanulas, are gathered in somewhat loose clusters. They display a speckled white colour, reminiscent of frost, widely bordered with a very powerful violet-purple. The outer edge of the corolla is discreetly lined with dark violet.

The 'Gloire de Quatre Rue' penstemon can be used in flower beds or borders, among perennials such as agapanthus, caryopteris, Rhodoanthemum hosimariensis, cape daisies, or mixed with annuals such as love-in-a-mist. It can be intermingled between rocks in a rockery (in soil that is not too chalky) with cotton lavenders, rockroses, or wormwoods. It also performs very well in pots, with proper drainage and regular fertilisation. Penstemons also make excellent cut flowers.

Planting and care

Penstemon 'Gloire de Quatre Rue' is a hybrid plant that requires specific conditions for successful cultivation. The plant is not very hardy and can only tolerate temperatures above -10°C (14°F) to -12°C (10.4°F) as long as the soil is well-drained in winter. For optimal growth, it is crucial to cultivate the plant in cool to dry soils that are rich and well-drained, especially during winter. If the soil is too wet, the plant will rot quickly.

The plant's cultivation needs vary depending on the climate of the region. In cooler climates, it is best to place the plant in a warm, sunny location protected from cold winds, preferably with a south or west exposure. In hotter climates, a cooler and semi-shaded area is more suitable. In very cold regions, it is recommended to take stem cuttings in autumn.

Penstemon 'Gloire de Quatre Rue' does not suffer from specific diseases, requiring minimal maintenance. When removing faded flowers in autumn, shortening the withered stems slightly without cutting them back to the ground, especially in regions with humid winters, is essential. The foliage plays a significant role in moisture regulation. Branches whose foliage has been damaged by the cold should be shortened only after spring is well established (March-April). If summer is dry, regular watering is necessary to support flowering.

In the coldest regions, covering the plant's base with glazing or a frame is recommended to protect it from severe cold. Rejuvenate the plant by dividing it every three or four years, but always wait until spring.

Care

Pruning instructions In autumn, when you're removing faded flowers, make sure to lightly trim the withered stems without cutting them down to the ground. This is particularly important in regions where the winter is damp because the foliage helps regulate moisture. Wait until spring is well established (March-April) before shortening the branches whose foliage has been damaged by the cold. It's important to regularly remove the faded flowers.
