It is currently in full flower. I thought it hadn't survived, but it turns out it was an "old" Garnet penstemon that I had moved to place it next to and contrast with the white. Clearly, it didn't like being transplanted.

Planting and care

For optimal growth, it is important to plant penstemons in fresh and well-drained soil, in a sunny location (partial shade may be necessary in warm climates). At the time of planting, it is advisable to give them a base fertiliser. To extend the flowering period, it is recommended to cut the faded stems. When the flowering season is over, it is necessary to prune the plants and mulch them in colder regions, as penstemons are not very tolerant to severe winter frosts.

Care

Pruning instructions In early spring, once the risk of frost is gone, the base should be trimmed to 20 cm (8in) to encourage growth and blooming. During the flowering period, it's important to cut off faded flowers by snipping the floral spikes at the axil of new shoots (between the stem and the leaves). This will cause a second wave of flowers and keep the plant young and healthy.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time April to May, August to September
