Two very beautiful plants out of three (the third one broken right at the collar) planted next to 'Red Dream' salvias! Now we patiently wait for the lovely season.

Description

The Penstemon heterophyllus 'Blue Spring' is a variety of penstemon whose long summer flowering of bright blue touched with pink does not go unnoticed. This perennial forms a beautiful clump of slender stems covered with flowers that stand out in borders, but also in a pot on the terrace. Plant it in full sun in well-drained, moist to dry soil. This lovely flower easily self-seeds here and there in the garden.

Penstemon heterophyllus is a short-lived perennial or undershrub native to hills, meadows, open forest areas of the Chaparral, and foothills of California and Oregon, at an altitude below 5500 m. 'Blue Spring' is a selection with truly bright flowers, almost turquoise with a pink base. This plant quickly forms a bushy clump that reaches a height of 40 cm. It produces a rosette of long, narrow, bluish-green leaves that usually persist in winter. The flowering is remarkably abundant from June to August. The branched flower stems carry tubular flowers 3 to 4 cm long for weeks, provided that faded flowers are regularly removed. The flowering is melliferous and nectariferous.

The 'Blue Spring' penstemon will thrive in rock gardens, borders, or in flower pots alongside gauras, snapdragons, or bushy salvias. Its unique blue color pairs perfectly with the orange corollas of California poppy and the white of the snow-in-summer. This penstemon is very drought-tolerant once established. It is undoubtedly one of the best for gardens in the south of France.

Planting and care

The hardiness of Penstemon heterophyllus Blue Spring is moderate, withstanding temperatures as low as -9°C (15°F) as long as the soil is well-drained. It also tolerates summer humidity, again in well-drained soil. Once well-established, the plant can withstand periods of drought.

In order to successfully grow penstemons, the soil type is crucial. They generally prefer rich soil that is not too dry in the summer, but still well-drained. In excessively moist soil, they will quickly rot. In cooler climates, place the plants in a warm and sunny location, protected from cold winds (south or west exposure). In warmer climates, choose a cooler and partially shaded spot. In very cold regions, it is advisable to take stem cuttings in autumn.

Penstemons are not prone to any specific diseases. These plants require minimal maintenance, but when removing faded flowers in autumn, it is important to lightly prune the stems without cutting them back to the ground, especially in regions with humid winters. The foliage plays an important role in moisture regulation. Wait until spring is well-established (March-April) to prune any branches that have been damaged by cold weather. If the summer is dry, water regularly to support flowering. In the coldest regions, cover the base of the plant with glass or a cold frame to protect it from severe cold. Divide your penstemons every three or four years to rejuvenate them, but also wait until spring to perform this operation.
