Description

We do not know if the name "Cape Fuchsia" was given to them for the shape of their flowers or for their hardiness, which is roughly equivalent to that of Fuchsia magellanica. Whatever the reason, they are excellent plants, well adapted to cooler climates as long as the soil is not waterlogged in winter. We have been cultivating several species and varieties for many years, and except for 85/86, when many suffered - the temperature dropped to -23°C (-9.4 °F) that winter - they have always thrived.

Semi-woody plant, sometimes spreading using its underground stolons.
The erect stems bear dark green rounded leaves, which persist when the winter is not too harsh. Flowers gathered along the stems in pendulous tubes. This variety with flowers of a pretty pastel pink, somewhat muted, can be paired with dahlias in the same tones.

Planting and care

In cold regions, it is recommended to cover the stumps with a litter layer of dead leaves. The soil that hosts them should not be too dry, especially in summer, as they need moisture and a rich soil, even clayey, to thrive. They all originate from South Africa (Drakensberg), where they often grow at altitudes of over 2000 meters (6561 feet), along the banks of streams.
