Description

The Phlox divaricata or canadensis 'Dirigo Ice' is a small perennial with semi-evergreen foliage, very floriferous, forming a carpet of fragrant flowers, bluish-white with a pale violet heart.

This ground cover variety of Phlox develops short stems that root easily on the ground, reaching 30-35cm (12-14in) in height when mature. It has dark green, linear, lanceolate leaves, finely downy. In May-June, numerous stems with terminal corymbs bear 8 to 10 flowers, a lilac-white corolla, and a very pale violet centre.

Originally from North America, the Phlox divaricata 'Dirigo Ice' likes fresh, humus-bearing, well-drained, non-chalky soil and full sun. Add compost when planting mulch the soil to keep it cool, and prune the faded flowers to prevent powdery mildew.

The Phlox divaricata 'Dirigo Ice' is used in rock gardens, borders, or in containers in association with creeping veronicas, aubrietas, or at the base of bush roses.
