Description

Phlox paniculata 'Europa' is a romantic and highly fragrant variety of Phlox that is easy to grow.  With its pale pink flowers enhanced by a very vibrant magenta centre, it will bring height, charm, and colour to the summer garden. Gathered in generous panicles, they bloom on a medium-sized but well-branched and abundantly leafy and elegant plant. In damp and fertile soil, it is aneasy and accommodating perennial, essential in a flower garden and in bouquets.

Phlox paniculata 'Europa' belongs to the family of Polemoniaceae. It is a woody perennial that forms a dense clump of leafy stems reaching about 70 cm (28in) in height and 40 cm (16in) in width. The stems, stiff and sturdy, are abundantly covered with dark but vibrant green leaves, dentate at the edges, measuring 8 cm (3in) in length. Flowering begins in mid-July, at the height of summer, and continues until September, provided faded flowers are removed. The small flowers have a tubular corolla, light pink in colour, with a clear magenta centre. They are clustered at the end of erect, dense, and pyramidal stems, 15 cm (6in) in length, which are wonderfully fragrant. Their weight slightly bends the stems. The flowering is attractive to bees and nectar-feeding insects.

Light, lively, loaded with flowers, and often fragrant, Phlox are perennial plants made for ornamental gardens, as their simplicity and generosity are almost unmatched in perennial borders.  They work well with Monarda 'Mohawk' or Marguerites 'Wirral Supreme'. Phlox 'Europa' can be paired with gauras, cleomes, Oriental poppies, as well as perennial delphiniums that appreciate the same conditions. Tall phlox make good companions for bush roses, with lovely colour combinations.  Phlox paniculata 'Europa' is a top-notch perennial for flowering summer borders and making your own bouquets for the house.

Planting and care

Phlox paniculata 'Europa' are easy to grow in ordinary soil that stays moist. Phlox 'Europa' prefers damp and rich soil, even clay soils which are well-drained. It needs sun to flower well. A too dry or too hot environment makes the foliage more susceptible to powdery mildew. Planted in the sun in a climate with hot summers, it will require regular watering and mulching at the base. Pruning faded inflorescences promotes a second flowering at the end of the season. Protect young plants from slugs, which are fond of their tender shoots.
