Description

Phlox paniculata 'Graf Zeppelin', Garden Phlox, produces fragrant consical blooms throughout the summer. The white flowers are enhanced by a carmine pink heart, standing out well against dark green foliage. Excellent in flower beds with blue or red blooms, perfect for bouquets, this perennial prefers sunny and damp soils. Bright, floriferous, slow-growing but reliable, this Phlox has a reputation for adapting to many growing conditions.

Phlox paniculata 'Graf Zeppelin' belongs to the family of Polemoniaceae. It is an easy to grow and undemanding variety. A woody perennial, it slowly forms a compact clump of leafy stems reaching 70 cm (28in) to 1 m (3ft) in height and 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24in) in width. The stiff and sturdy stems sometimes require staking. They are covered with alternate, simple, ovate, and lanceolate dark green leaves, which are very elegant. Flowering begins in early July, at the height of summer, and continues until September, provided faded inflorescences are removed. The flowers, of good size for a Phlox, have a tubular snow-white corolla with a pink-red cherry centre. They are grouped at the tips of the stems in dense and fragrant panicles, reaching 20 cm (8in) in length. The flowering is melliferous and nectariferous.

Phlox 'Graf Zeppelin' is a reliable and sturdy plant, obtained in 1939, still highly appreciated and planted in gardens for its ease of cultivation. It will be planted in perennial beds, alongside blue, red, or subtly violet blooms with which it forms a perfect colourful association. Pair it with lavender-blue asters, blue-violet 'Border Gem' Phlox, or red peonies with which it creates an elegant contrast. Phlox paniculata also make good companions for bush roses.  Given its abundant flowering, beautiful bouquets can be made for the home.

Planting and care

Phlox paniculata are easy to grow plants. Phlox paniculata Windsor prefers a moist and rich soil, even clay soils. It needs sun to flower well. An environment that is too dry or too hot makes the foliage susceptible to powdery mildew. Planted in the sun in a climate with hot summers, it requires regular watering and mulching at the base. Pruning faded flowers promotes a second flowering at the end of the season. Protect young plants from slugs, which are fond of their tender shoots.
