Description

The Phlox subulata 'Amazing Grace' is a variety of moss phlox appreciated for its creeping growth that forms a dense carpet of greenery and its vibrant flowering. The delicate foliage of Phlox subulata 'Amazing Grace' creates a dense grassy clump that quickly forms a thick cushion about 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6in) high. It is covered with small white flowers with a purple centre in April-May. The dwarf Phlox is an evergreen perennial plant, ideal for planting in rockeries, slopes, borders, or on walls. This fast-growing plant thrives in well-drained soils, preferably dry and even limestone, whether exposed to full sun or partial shade. It retains visual appeal outside its flowering period by forming charming cushions with its fine dark green foliage.

The Phlox subulata, also known as Moss Phlox, belongs to the Polemoniaceae family. This alpine, perennial plant is native to the central and eastern United States. The 'Amazing Grace' variety is presented as a compact cushion resembling moss, about 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6in) high. This plant has the ability to spread on the ground over an area of at least 50 cm (20in) in diameter thanks to its creeping stems that take root when in contact with the ground. The flowering is particularly generous, spreading from May to June, sometimes as early as April, depending on climatic conditions, before the arrival of high summer temperatures and drought. During this period, the plant is adorned with a profusion of small white flowers with 5 petals, measuring 1.5 to 2.5 cm (1in) in diameter, with a small purple circle in the center of each flower. Its dense and evergreen foliage in winter comprises small linear leaves resembling needles, 0.6 to 1.2 cm (0 to 1in) long.

The Phlox subulata 'Amazing Grace' is an excellent perennial plant, thanks to its creeping stems that easily root in the ground, making it an ideal choice for covering a slope or a stone wall or filling a border. This rockery plant, par excellence, is renowned for its drought resistance once well established. For maximum visual impact, plant Phlox subulata 'Amazing Grace' en masse, combining it with other varieties of moss phlox in pink, white, or mauve colours. It also shines when associated with other perennials suitable for rockeries such as iberis, Basket of Gold (Alyssum saxatile), aubrietas, Wall Bellflowers (Campanula poscharskyana), thymes, Germander (Teucrium chamaedrys), or simply in the company of colourful sedums. Its compact growth also makes it an excellent choice for container cultivation.

Planting and care

The Phlox subulata 'Amazing Grace' likes light, well-drained soils, dry to moist, fairly fertile even though it adapts to poor soil. In humid regions, it is preferable to cultivate it on a sloping terrain, in a rock garden, or as a crown of a flowered wall in sandy, gravelly soil, even with a tendency towards limestone. We have noticed that this phlox is even more afraid of the scorching sun than Phlox douglasii, so it is preferable to plant it in a partially shaded area. It tolerates drought quite well once established.
