Description
The 'Spotty Dotty' Podophyllum is a exceptional ground cover perennial with tabular foliage, it is green speckled with chocolate under which curious purple-red flowers bloom in spring.
This rare plant, derived from a selection of Podophyllum delavayi, has a spreading habit. In early spring, the Spotty Dotty Podophyllum develops deciduous chartreuse green leaves speckled with chocolate, 20cm (8in) in diameter, in the shape of an umbrella, slightly dentate at the edges. In May, curious star-shaped purple flowers, 3cm (1in) in diameter, bloom under the foliage and give way in summer to fleshy and toxic fruits!
Originally from high-altitude forests in China, the Spotty Dotty Podophyllum grows in humus-bearing, moist, well-drained soil in semi-shaded areas. Like all plants on the edge of the forest, it does not like windy situations.
This botanical curiosity should be highlighted on the edge of a shaded flowerbed, combined with ferns, Epimediums, Solomon's Seals, and Arisaema.

Podophyllum 'Spotty Dotty' thrives well in semi-shaded areas of the garden. Plant it in a fresh but well-drained, humus-bearing, light and lime-free soil. During planting, add leaf compost. In colder regions, protect the stump in winter with a 20cm (8in) thick layer of leaf mulch. Be careful in spring of slugs and snails that feast on the young leaves.
