Description

The Rodgersia aesculifolia is an imposing perennial, with leaves that strongly resemble horse chestnut leaves.

These horse chestnut leaves form a bushy clump, which can reach up to 1m (3ft) in height. The leaves are palmate with 7 wrinkled leaflets, glossy and 50 cm (20in) long, green with brown veins. The flowering of this rodgersia aesculifolia appears in August - September in the form of large fluffy conical panicles carried by sturdy stems reaching 1m (3ft) 50. The flowers are cream white star-shaped, turning pink at the end of flowering.

This perennial thrives in a neutral to acidic, moist to wet soil in partial shade. It is an excellent ground cover for shaded areas.

Horse chestnut leaves will complement ferns and grasses.

Planting and care

The rodgersia aesculifolia is planted in moist to even wet and rich soil: typically woodland humus, acidic or neutral (avoid planting in limestone areas). It is preferably planted in partial shade (possibly in full sun in an area that remains moist in the summer), with plantings spaced apart: at ripeness, the Rodgersia reaches a width of one meter!
