Description
Rodgersia pinnata 'Bronze Peacock' is a very recent variety of rodgersia with a compact habit. It bears the darkest and most enigmatic foliage of all rodgersias. It develops an abundance of palmate foliage reminiscent of chestnut, with an antique brown colour that seems forged in bronze. In summer, it is adorned with bright pink flowers, while the foliage takes on a brilliant red-violet hue. With its compact habit and sumptuous foliage, this robust perennial is irreplaceable in humid and shaded areas, even when space is limited.
Rodgersia pinnata is a Chinese herbaceous and deciduous species belonging to the Saxifragaceae family. From its fleshy rhizome emerges a clump of large pinnate leaves, not exceeding 60cm (24in) in height and 80cm (32in) in width. The clumps slowly spread to form stumps of over 1m² over time. The 'Bronze Peacock' variety, registered in 2012 in Oregon by Terra Nova Nurseries, has been the subject of a patent application: unlike others, it originates from a tissue culture mutation of R. pinnata 'Ideal'. The foliage of this perennial is distinguished by its thickness and its appearance, which closely resembles that of chestnuts. The leaves are divided into 4 to 8 lanceolate, wrinkled, deeply veined leaflets, arranged in opposite pairs, with a terminal leaflet. What distinguishes the 'Bronze Peacock' cultivar are the beautifully dark and shiny shades of its foliage in spring, as well as those of its new summer shoots. It blooms at the beginning of summer, sending out large panicles on red stems, taller than those of other varieties, adorned with softly scented bright pink flowers. The flowering is followed on the floral stalks by the formation of dark, ornamental seed heads that persist on the plant for a long time.
Rodgersia pinnata 'Bronze Peacock' loves cool and shady areas. It is ideal near water features, alongside ferns, grasses, and astilbes, or along the edge of moist woodland with Tiarella and heucheras. It can tolerate drier conditions, as long as it is planted in shade. Plant it in numbers to cover the ground at the edge of a shaded path, or as a standalone specimen, highlighted by a golden cushion of sagina, a large clump of heuchera, and the blue flowers of hepaticas.

Planting and care
Plant in moist to wet and rich soil, typically woodland humus, and either acidic or neutral (avoid planting in limestone areas). Plant in partial shade (possibly in full sun in an area that remains moist in summer), with spacing between plantings. It needs room to grow as its mature size can reach over 1m (3ft). Make sure to protect it from strong winds and direct sunlight that can damage its foliage.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
