The young plant is not the one you were supposed to send me, compared to the photo of the young plant that I was supposed to receive. There is only one dry leaf and 3 dry stems that are 2cm/3cm (1in) tall! Whereas in your photo, it is at least 8 to 9 cm (3 to 4in) tall with a few leaves. I can take a photo and send it to you.

Description

Scutellaria incana is a perennial with an upright habit forming a rounded clump. This floriferous plant has a rapid growth rate. It produces straight stems every spring on which pretty flowers form from July to September. These tubular flowers bear two lips. The flowers come together in compact clusters of a soft lavender-blue.

It has deciduous foliage composed of opposite and ovate leaves. They are fuzzy and crinkled. Of good size, it can reach 50 to 80cm (20 to 32in) in height.

Scutellaria is native to Mongolia, China, and Japan. It is widespread in temperate regions as well as in tropical mountains. Very hardy, it flowers almost everywhere, even under trees.

Its lavender-blue colour beautifully complements other plants. Plant it with other perennials that thrive in dry soils in summer, such as Geranium 'Dilys'.

Planting and care

Scutellaria incana can be grown in full sun or light shade in light, well-drained soil that is preferably slightly chalky. However, it can tolerate any type of soil. It is resistant to drought. When planting, space your scutellarias 50cm (20in) apart as they do not like root competition. The stems of this perennial are upright and therefore do not need staking. In cold regions, apply a thick layer of mulch over the stump during winter. There is no need to cut back the plant stems after flowering as the flower spikes remain attractive even after the flowers have faded. Water occasionally during periods of drought. Be aware of slugs and aphids, which are fond of this plant.
