Sedum Mojave Jewels Diamond - Stonecrop

Sedum 'Diamond' is part of the Mojave Jewels series, which features very robust cultivars with dark leaves that do not droop. This 'Diamond' cultivar has slightly arched red stems, purple-red foliage, and candy pink flowers. This beautiful succulent foliage has a slate blue sheen. Initially greenish-red, the purple intensifies with more sunlight. The flowers vary from green to pinkish-red at maturity. The stems are particularly rigid and do not trail. It is a hardy and carefree plant, suitable for dry and shallow soils, requiring very little maintenance and adding charm to the late season.

Sedum 'Diamond' belongs to the Crassulaceae family. It is a cultivar from the Mojave Jewels series, produced by AB-Cultivars. It forms bushy, upright clumps, reaching 40cm (16in) in height and spreading over 35cm (14in). Flowering occurs in August and September. The inflorescences, in terminal cymes, are rounded and dense, bearing tiny star-shaped flowers that emerge as green buds and then open into shades of red-pink to candy pink. They form false umbels that are intensely nectar-rich and honey-producing. The thick and fleshy deciduous foliage is greenish-red to purple in colour, creating a beautiful harmony with the flowering. The leaves are flat and ovate. The highly decorative brown-violet seeds serve as food for birds in winter.

Ideal for gardens where the soil is lacking in depth, Sedum 'Diamond' is primarily a plant for well-drained or even dry soil. Pair it in a rock garden with grasses and grey-leaved plants that can tolerate the same difficult living conditions. Along the edge of a slightly moist sunny flower bed, plant it with stipa, asters, solidago, and tanacetum. Stunning in a pot display, it is also an excellent flower for drying or for bouquets.
