A wonder that withstands everything since its first summer when it was forgotten and completely covered by other plants. The slightest fragment quickly and easily takes root. At the moment, its vibrant colour enhances three Delf blue hyacinths. Its colour greatly depends on the exposure. Elsewhere, it is just starting to shed its reddish winter coat.

Description

Sedum reflexum 'Angelina', also known as reflexed stonecrop or rock stonecrop, is a small succulent perennial and groundcover plant, perfect for rock gardens. Its evergreen foliage forms a carpet of thin cylindrical chartreuse green leaves in spring, turning bronze with orange hues in autumn. Its yellow cyme flowers bloom in summer. It is a carefree plant, suitable for dry soils, requiring very little maintenance and adding charm to neglected areas of the garden.

Sedum reflexum 'Angelina' is a rare form. It is a small evergreen perennial plant with fleshy leaves, belonging to the Crassulaceae family. It does not exceed 15cm (6in) in height. It spreads rapidly through stem rooting and sowing, eventually forming beautiful carpets. Its creeping stems are covered with needle-like fleshy leaves. They are initially chartreuse green, then turn bronze to purple with orange hues as the first cold weather arrives. This plant produces numerous sterile upright shoots with linear leaves ending in a point. From June to August, yellow flowers appear, grouped in several curved spikes before blooming. They open in corymbs. The nectar-rich flowers attract many pollinating insects.

In nature, reflexed stonecrops prefer rocks and stone walls, where they can live with very little soil. The 'Angelina' sedum is a boon for dry gardens, rockeries, and places with thin and poor soil. It pairs well with dwarf wormwoods, Teucrium marum, Thymus polytrichus, cerastiums, and Montpellier soapwort. Particularly robust and hardy in well-drained soil, it can spread on rooftop terraces. In this usage, it can be associated with Delosperma lineare, Drosanthemum hispidum, Malephora crocea, and Sempervivums.

Planting and care

Plant Sedum reflexum 'Angelina' in light, rather poor, stony, even very dry soil. It must be absolutely well-drained to spare the roots from the cold moisture of winter. It tolerates clay soils in dry winter regions. Excessive fertilisation can distort this variety. Plant it in full sun, to enhance the foliage colouration. This plant is hardy once established. In pots, provide a gravel bed for drainage. Remove faded flowers to avoid spontaneous sowing. Divide the plant after 3 to 4 years to encourage vigorous growth and prevent it from becoming bare in the centre and the lateral stems from collapsing on the ground.

Sedums are very easy to propagate. In spring, cut a stem or even a leaf and leave for a few days in a dry and shaded place, before placing in a tray of moist sand.
