Description

Sidalcea malviflora Elsie Heugh is a deciduous, summer flowering perennial with clusters of abundant small cup-shaped, satin pink flowers with 2 cm (1in) long, marginate petals, from July to August. The very bright flowers are 5 cm (2in) in diameter and used for making beautiful bouquets. They are at the top of upright and sturdy stems growing in a spreading clump.

The medium green foliage is deciduous and the leaves measure from 3 to 8 cm (1 to 3in) wide. The basal leaves are rounded and those on the stems are lobed. Sidalcea Elsie Heugh is hardy and originates from California.

Sidalcea malviflora Elsie Heugh can reach of 80 cm (32in) high. It is ideal in a countryside garden in flower beds and borders among other plants like ferns and wild plants.

Planting and care

Sidalcea Elsie Heugh thrives in the sun in moist, well-drained soil, preferably without limestone. It can be grown in partial shade. Sidalcea doesn't like heavy and wet soils. When planting, space the young plants 50 cm (20in) apart and make sure the soil is not waterlogged. After flowering, cut back the stems to 15 cm (6in) from the ground to prevent seed formation and encourage a second flowering. In winter, protect it with dry mulch like straw or ferns.
