Description
Tolmiea menziesii Cool Gold is part of a group of evergreen perennial plants which make good groundcover in damp and semi-shaded areas. This Cool Gold variety is characterised by densely packed, disease-resistant foliage that ranges from golden to lime green. It flowers discreetly in spring, with small flowers that can vary in colour from green to brown. Capable of discouraging unwanted weeds and decorative even in winter, this Tolmiea thrives in damp woodland areas or at the base of trees, in regions that are not too cold. It can also be successfully grown in hanging baskets in a conservatory or in a bright, moderately heated indoor space.
Tolmiea menziesii Cool Gold belongs to the family Saxifragaceae. Its ancestor is native to the undergrowth of the west coast of the United States, and its hardiness does not exceed -10°C (14°F) at its coldest. It is a perennial plant with a rhizomatous rootstock: it spreads fairly rapidly over time, forming a carpet through small stolons, but it can be easily controlled. The plant has a spread-out, dense growth habit that persists in winter (in not too cold winters), reaching a height of 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in). This Tolmiea produces heart-shaped, very hairy leaves with finely toothed edges. New leaves emerge above the older ones. The lamina is pale green to golden yellow in colour. Seedlings form on the older leaves, at the point where the petiole joins the leaf lamina. These rootless seedlings can be used for cuttings to propagate the plant. Flowering occurs in late spring, usually in June. It takes the form of pale green and brown bell-shaped flowers arranged in clusters.
Tolmiea menziesii is a hardy, bright, evergreen groundcover plant suitable for mild climates, which should be grown in humus-rich soil and in moderately shaded areas. Once established, they require little maintenance. Regular watering is necessary during dry summers. Plant them at the base of trees, alongside hostas and ferns. You can create a beautiful spring scene by planting them with other shade-loving perennials such as watercress, creeping bugleweed, Lychnis Jenny, pink astilbes, Mertensia virginica, and white or pink Physostegia virginiana. Indoors, place the Tolmiea menziesii Cool Gold in a hanging basket in a bright room, but avoid direct sunlight that could scorch its leaves.

Planting and care
Tolmiea menziesii are moderately hardy perennial plants, to -10°C (14°F) at the coldest, that spread thanks to their short runners, in partially shaded areas and in cool to moist, humus-rich soils, preferably slightly acidic. They do not tolerate limestone well. They can tolerate some sun (morning sun) but prefer dappled shade. In dense shade, they will grow well but their foliage will be less colourful. Once well-established, these perennials require no maintenance except for regular watering in dry summers. Easy to cultivate in pots, indoors, in a good potting soil kept moist, always away from direct sunlight (in a bright room, but without direct sun).

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
