Description

Thalictrum flavum glaucum, a natural variety of Yellow Meadow-rue, is a perennial plant with a bushy habit. Its elegant foliage displays a beautiful bluish-green colour with silver reflections. The generous flowering is pale yellow in colour. With its size, airy appearance, and pretty pastel colours of its inflorescences, it will be perfect for adding height and lightness to flower beds.

Originally from Spain and North Africa, Thalictrum flavum subspecies glaucum is a perennial plant with a bushy habit, forming clumps 1 to 1.5 metres (3 to 5 feet) tall and about 50 cm (20in) wide. The flowering takes place between June and July, with tall stems topped with numerous small flowers with very long stamens, they are pale yellow in colour and resemble mimosa flowers. Its deciduous foliage perfectly highlights the flowers with its bluish-green colour. The leaves are glaucous, light, and deeply lobed.

Despite its seemingly delicate and fragile appearance, Thalictrum flavum ssp. glaucum is very hardy and low-maintenance, although it may take some time to establish itself. This meadow-rue is the ideal plant to brighten up and flower shaded areas in the garden. It will create a beautiful contrast with less delicate perennials, as well as at the edge of shrub beds. It will naturally find its place alongside Hostas, Hydrangeas, Japanese Anemones, or ferns, for example. This plant will also thrive in shaded rockeries.

Planting and care

Thalictrum flavum ssp. glaucum thrives in sunny or partially shaded positions. Plant it from March to May and from September to November in a humus-rich, moist to wet soil, rich in organic matter and well-drained. It also tolerates acidic or slightly chalky soils. Do not hesitate to amend the soil with compost every year to facilitate root development. Water well during very dry and hot summer periods, especially during the first few years after planting. Deciduous, it completely disappears in winter and will only reappear in spring, and quite late. Therefore, it is advisable not to cut the plant to ground level in autumn, so as not to forget its location in the following spring. It is a slow-growing plant, but it will delight the gardener over the years.
