Description

Heucherella alba Bridget Bloom is a perennial that forms cushions of evergreen light green leaves with dark green veins, topped with slender stems carrying an abundance of small candy pink flowers.

This Heucherella, resulting from the cross-breeding between Heuchera and Tiarella, provides an airy and early flowering composed of long spikes of candy pink blossoms in April. The 'Bridget Bloom' variety has excellent hardiness. This vigorous plant grows larger over time and can reach a height of 40cm (16in) at maturity.

Easy to grow, it can be found in the border of perennial beds, in partial shade. It creates beautiful spring scenes alongside bleeding hearts and 'Albovariegatus' velvet grass at the base of a 'Falconet Charlet' Japanese quince tree.

Planting and care

Place the Heucherella in shade or partial shade during spring or autumn. This hardy perennial is easy to grow and thrives in good garden soil. Plant it in a light and rich soil, moist but well-drained. Leave a depth of 20cm (8in). Space the heucherellas 30cm (12in) apart. During winter, the heucherella renews its foliage, so it is best to cut back the previous year's leaves in January to February. The roots tend to lift, so it is necessary to mulch every year or possibly lift and replant in September and October, ensuring the collar is just level with the ground. Ensure the soil remains sufficiently moist, even during the summer heat which can be fatal to young plants lacking water. In a pot, it requires regular watering throughout the summer.
