Description

The Heucherella 'Solar Eclipse' is a magnificent selection whose unique foliage deserves a prime spot in the garden.

This selection, similar to the variety 'Solar Power', forms a dense, hemispherical clump measuring 35cm (14in) in diameter. The peltate, evergreen foliage is initially brown-red in the center and marginate with golden lemon yellow at the edges, then evolves to become black and pistachio green. Cultivated primarily for its remarkable foliage, the Heucherella 'Solar Eclipse' produces small spike flowers in cream-white from May to June, creating a contrast with the brown and yellow foliage.

This interesting plant, ornamental for 10 months out of 12, thrives in shade, alongside ferns, Carex, and perennial geraniums.

Planting and care

Place the Heucherella 'Solar Eclipse' in shade or partial shade during spring or autumn. This hardy perennial is easy to grow and thrives in good garden soil. Therefore, plant it in a light and fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Provide a depth of 20 cm (8in). Space the heucherellas 30 cm (12in) apart. During winter, the heucherella renews its foliage, so it is best to cut back the previous year's leaves from January to February. The roots tend to lift, so it is necessary to mulch every year or potentially uproot and replant in September and October, with the collar just level with the ground. Be careful to maintain a certain level of moisture in summer, especially in the first year.
