Description

The Tradescantia andersoniana Osprey is a perennial with flowers that have 3 petals of a bluish-white colour with a deep blue centre for this variety.

Also nicknamed Virginia ephemeral, this plant owes its common name to its American origin. Each flower lasts only briefly, like daylilies, nicknamed "Daylilies". This overlooks the long flowering period of 4 months and sometimes more if the clumps are pruned a little during the season.

The stump of the Tradescantia Osprey is vigorous and quickly forms beautiful dense clumps. The lanceolate deciduous foliage somewhat resembles that of an iris. The curious flowers with 3 large petals are bluish-white with a strong centre in this variety.

The Tradescantia 'Osprey' is hardy and easy to grow in full sun or partial shade in any heavy, rich, moist, or wet soil. Plant it on the edge of a cool massif or along a wet bank with astilbes, filipendulas, trollius, and perennial geraniums.

Planting and care

The Tradescantia andersoniana 'Osprey' enjoys moist or wet soil; even clayey and heavy soil does not scare it. However, it thrives in any garden soil as long as it is not too dry in summer. It tolerates full sun if moisture is not lacking. Cut faded flowers close to the ground to promote a second flowering in autumn.
