Description

Originating from Japan, Tricyrtis are also called toad lilies because of the numerous spots present on the petals. Floriferous in autumn, the flowers offer a wide range of colours, from pure white to dark purple. Hardy and easy to grow, they appreciate cool and humus-bearing soils.

Flowering is the same as the type, only the foliage differs. In this variety, it is delicately bordered by a more or less regular white line, highlighting the dark green lamina. Still too little used in our gardens, it will happily share the territory with hostas and ferns, offering its flowers during a season when most other woodland flowers have faded. If early frosts are likely to affect its flowering, it is a very hardy plant that will bring an exotic and unexpected touch to a shady rockery. Perfectly at home among the round and mossy stones of a Japanese garden, it also thrives in a pot on a shaded terrace, where its lanceolate foliage is decorative from spring to autumn.

Attention, young shoots are often targeted by small gray slugs!

Planting and care

Plant your Albomarginata Trycirtis hirta in a fairly shaded position however, it can be planted in light sun north if watering is consistent and the soil remains constantly moist.

Plant it in a cool, humus-bearing, fairly rich, slightly acidic or neutral soil, sheltered from the wind that would bend the tall flower stalks, both in open ground and in pots. Flowering will be later if the summer is dry, returning with the September rains, which is not a problem in regions where autumn is mild and long. However, when frost comes early, a late flowering will be destroyed by the cold. In this case, the soil should not completely dry out in spring and summer, which means that the plant should be regularly watered during periods of summer drought. A mulch will help keep the plant's base cool.

Caution, young shoots are often targeted by small grey slugs. Spread ash, crushed eggshells, or if not available, granules suitable for organic farming (which are not harmful to animals that consume slugs).
