Description

Veronica spicata 'Rofuchs', sometimes called 'Red Fox' and also known as spiked speedwell, is a small sun-loving perennial that bears many spikes with star-shaped flowers in shades of red and soft fuchsia pink in early summer.

A dense-rooted perennial, Veronica spicata 'Rotfuchs' is a small sun-loving perennial. It has deciduous, ovate leaves with a lovely greyish-green colour and finely toothed edges.

In summer, from July to August, it produces flowers with star-shaped petals in an indefinable colour: a mix of red and soft fuchsia pink. These flowers are gathered on upright spikes that reach a height of 30cm (12in).

This compact variety should be planted in well-drained soil, even rocky and limestone soil, preferably in full sun. Veronica Rotfuchs is very useful for dressing the base of shrub roses or as a border in a dry bed or rock garden, paired with monardas, stipas, phlox, or phlomis.

Planting and care

The spiked speedwell is a sun-loving plant that thrives in poor soils. Its preferred habitat is limestone soil, rather dry and rocky or gravelly, and well-drained. It dislikes stagnant moisture in winter much more than the cold. You can cut back the faded stems, which have a brownish appearance. Indeed, the dried-up stems are not always aesthetically pleasing, so it is best to remove them, which will also promote re-flowering. Some plants can also self-sow, but the plants resulting from these spontaneous seedlings may not always be identical to the parent plant. In any case, the clumps should be cut back in spring before the vegetation emerges.
