Planted in a pot. Very easy to grow except for a strong need for water. Young plant very cheerful and lively.

Description

Erysimum 'Jubilee Gold' is a perennial with a bushy and compact habit, perfect for garden beds and pots. Throughout spring, it produces an abundance of short bouquets of bright golden-yellow flowers, emerging from dark green sword-shaped evergreen leaves. It requires well-drained, neutral to limestone soil. It will tolerate rocky or stony soil. It also needs a sunny exposure.

Native to limestone and dry areas of southern Europe, central Asia, and North America, erysimum or cheiranthus are closely related to wallflowers. All these plants belong to the Brassicaceae family. Erysimum 'Jubilee Gold' is a hardy perennial, but its lifespan is limited. This hybrid stands out with its compact and bushy habit, reaching a height of no more than 40cm (16in) and a spread of 30cm (12in), as well as its long spring flowering period from April to June.

The generous flowering consists of clusters of small bright yellow flowers. The flowers are small (2cm (1in)) but gathered in clusters about 10cm (4in) long. They open successively. If the plant is pruned, there may be a brief summer flowering. Its dark green evergreen foliage, composed of sword-shaped leaves, provides a decorative contrast with the flowering. However, it is somewhat susceptible to very cold temperatures in winter.

Erysimum 'Jubilee Gold' is perfect for all sunny, dry, and rocky areas of the garden, as well as on a patio or in a pot placed along a sun-drenched wall. It can be planted in well-drained flower beds and rock gardens with paniculate gypsophiles, lavenders, rosemary, cerastiums, Stachys, catmints, or shrubby salvias. In short, we love it.

Planting and care

Plant Erysimum 'Jubilee Gold' in a very sunny position in well-drained, neutral to limestone soil. It will tolerate rocky or stony soil. Make sure the soil does not dry out too much in summer. Prune the stems after flowering. Erysimum is hardy, but the evergreen foliage weakens the plant in winter. In colder climates, you can protect the plant with a mulch in case of prolonged severe cold.
