Description

Rose Eglantyne is one of the most beautiful creations of the famous breeder David Austin. Everything about this variety is admirable: the beauty, the fragrance, and the abundance of its flowers, which are a soft and warm pink and bloom continuously until late in the season. Not to mention the wide and bushy habit of this beautiful bush with its disease-free glossy foliage. A sweet and powdery fragrance of old roses surrounds its flowering. In every way, it is an excellent rose for the garden.

The Eglantyne Ausmak Rose is part of a group of hybrids created by David Austin that carry the genes of old roses. One of its parents is the famous variety 'Mary Rose', which has passed on its beautiful resistance to rose diseases. Eglantyne has a bushy habit, rather wide and bushy, and its growth is fast and regular. At maturity, it will reach about 1m (3ft) in height and 90cm (35in) in width. The flowering continues continuously from June to October.  At the end of the young branches, solitary flowers or clusters of small bouquets appear, double and 9 cm (4in) wide. Perfectly formed, they are cups composed of many petals with incurved edges. Their colour is a soft rose, lighter at the periphery of the corolla and warmer in the centre. These flowers exude a very sweet fragrance with sweet notes, of medium to strong intensity depending on the time and ambient temperature. The foliage, composed of 5 to 7 fairly wide leaflets, is very ornamental with its glossy dark green color. It perfectly resists rose diseases.

Plant the Eglantyne rose in groups of 3 plants: that's how it will be the most beautiful. Plant some clumps of blue or violet salvias, Nepeta, and campanulas in front of this bed: the romantic setting of a small garden in the purest English tradition is created! It can be associated, like other English roses, with a bed of flowering shrubs, perennials, or light-flowering annuals. It is a reliable value in the garden that can, according to your preference, integrate into a small hedge, stand out on the lawn, or border the patio. Its roses last a long time, both on the bush and in a vase, with a pleasant powdery fragrance.

Creation by David Austin 1990.

Planting and care

The roses prefer a sunny location (at least 4 to 5 hours of sun per day) but sheltered from the scorching midday rays and strong wind. The roses appreciate loose, permeable, and humus-rich soils. They prefer slightly acidic soil, but will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked and sufficiently rich.  To plant your rose, work the soil by crumbling it well and putting an amendment at the bottom of the planting hole, such as bonemeal. Water generously after planting to remove air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to encourage rooting. Also, remember to provide your rose with special rose fertiliser that stimulates plant flowering.

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These stains are not harmful to the rose; it is a natural phenomenon.

Care

Pruning instructions At the end of winter, shorten the branches to 3-5 buds above the ground (at the lowest point), choosing an outward-facing bud for a more elegant habit. Take advantage of this pruning to remove dead wood and unsightly branches. The pruning is done at an angle above a bud. As the flowering progresses, remove faded flowers, as this stimulates the development of other buds.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year

Soil moisture Moist soil
Disease resistance Very good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
