Description
Martin Luther Rose® bush rose is recognisable by its clusters whose colour changes as the flowers open. The buds open in a soft apricot shade, then the petals fade to creamy white. Several shades can therefore be seen together on the same bush. Its dense, regular growth fits easily into a bed. Undemanding and highly disease-resistant, this repeat-flowering rose is particularly suited to gardeners who prefer to avoid treatments.
'Martin Luther Rose' belongs to the group of cluster-flowered bush roses, also known as floribundas. It is the cultivar 'TAN05415', bred in Germany by Hans Jürgen Evers for the Rosen Tantau nursery. This variety was first distributed under the name Sirius® in 2013. It is also known as Dronning Dorothea in Denmark and Ljubljana in Slovenia. The name Martin Luther Rose® was given to it when it was launched in 2017, the year of the five-hundredth anniversary of the Reformation. Tantau presented it as a charity rose supporting a social school in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The bush has an upright habit and branches from the base. It reaches 60 to 80 cm in height and 50 to 70 cm in width. In rich soil, in a favourable climate and with light pruning, it can grow larger and approach 1 m. German ADR trials even recorded stronger plants, proving that this variety is not a true dwarf rose despite its compact habit. Its flowers measure 6 to 8 cm in diameter. Double without being excessively full of petals, they open sufficiently for their stamens to be visible, and are visited by pollinating insects. They are borne in generous clusters that renew themselves from June to October, in several successive flushes. Their fragrance is light: it is more noticeable in mild, warm weather. The faded petals drop fairly easily, helping the bush to retain a neat appearance between flowering periods. The dense, slightly glossy foliage remains attractive throughout the flowering period. Its resistance to powdery mildew and black spot is one of the main qualities of this variety. It received the ADR rating in 2013 after several years of trials without fungicide treatment, then received various European awards, including the Golden Rose of The Hague in 2016.
This Martin Luther Rose® bush rose can form a large flowering border or a small low hedge, planting one young plant every 45 to 50 cm. In a bed, three plants grouped together quickly form a full, well-filled display. It can be paired with Patio Rose ‘Baby Iceberg’, hardy geranium ‘Orion’, Penstemon ‘Husker Red’ and Aster ‘Little Carlow’, for example. These plants, like it, appreciate sun and fertile soil that remains slightly moist in summer. In a deep container at least 40 to 50 cm wide, this rose can also flower for several years with regular applications of water and feed.

Planting and care
Plant Martin Luther Rose® rose from November to March in ordinary, well-loosened, deep, well-drained soil. Roses thrive in clay soils, which are better heavy than light. In soil that is too sandy, too compacted or too dry in summer, it is preferable to incorporate potting compost, well-rotted manure or compost into the bottom of the planting hole. This rose does, however, dislike waterlogged soil in winter. Plant it in a sunny position, or partial shade at a push. Roses are hungry plants, so applying a specific fertiliser will benefit the start of growth, followed by regular applications throughout flowering. To encourage repeat flowering, regularly remove faded flowers.
Roses are often blemished or unsightly at the end of summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These marks are not harmful to the rose; they are a natural phenomenon. Follow all our advice on how to remedy this and read our article: Help: my roses have spots

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
