The rose bush I received appears healthy. Planted along the edge of the path, I am now patiently waiting for it to take root... (or not?).

Description

The 'Bee Gold' rose is a small bush with clustered flowers, intended for natural gardens that encourage pollinators. Its pale yellow dog roses, with a clearly visible centre of stamens, provide nectar and pollen from late spring until autumn. This low-growing rose, with a regular habit and very healthy foliage, can be planted in pots, at the front of borders, along pathways, or to structure a small garden.

The 'Bee Gold' rose belongs to the Rosaceae family, like all roses. Selected in Belgium at the ILVO by Leen Leus in 2009, it was distributed by the Best Select group (selection code 09-212). It is classified in the floribunda and patio rose groups. Its habit is bushy and well-branched. In open ground, the plant reaches approximately 90 cm in height with a 60 cm spread; in containers, expect 60-70 cm. The glossy green deciduous foliage covers the plant well. The 4 cm flowers, most often gathered in small clusters, are single to semi-double (5–8 petals), of a light yellow that fades to a creamy yellow with numerous golden stamens. Flowering can begin as early as May and it renews itself until autumn. At the end of the season, small decorative red fruits form. The stems of this rose are slender, with scattered thorns. 'Bee Gold' is characterised by excellent resistance to foliar diseases and by its ability to attract pollinators.

The 'Bee Gold' rose adapts to all soils that are not too dry, but prefers fertile and deep soils. Its dense, low habit allows it to be used in large borders and in pots. Use it along a pathway or to accentuate shrub borders. You can plant 'Bee Gold' in groups of 3 plants, mix it with roses like 'Sweet Babylon Eyes' and 'Astronomia', and use 'Cutie Pie' and 'Vesuvia' to form a low, nectar-rich border in front of them from May until the first frosts. A few clumps of Nepeta 'Cat's Pajamas' will add a touch of airy blue to the whole, much to the delight of pollinators.

Planting and care

The Bee Gold rose prefers a sunny position (at least 4 to 5 hours of sun per day) but sheltered from the scorching midday rays and strong winds. It appreciates loose, permeable, deep and fertile soil. It will adapt to any garden provided the ground is well worked and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose, work your soil to a depth of 25 cm, breaking up the earth well and placing base fertiliser like dried blood or dehydrated horn at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your young plant, removed from its pot, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm of soil, backfill and water copiously to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate rooting. Also remember to provide your rose with special rose fertiliser, which stimulates plant flowering.
