This is a small conifer with a broad-based cone habit, developing dense branches with thread-like, cascading and tousled tips, giving an impression of lightness and softness. The branchlets are covered with persistent scales that are bright golden yellow turning yellowish-green over time, bringing light to darker corners. Its slow growth and reduced development make it suitable for use in decorative pots or small rock gardens. Very hardy, it is a variety that enjoys plenty of light without scorching sun and thrives in normal, non-calcareous, moist and well-drained soil.

Description

Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Filifera Aurea', also known as Sawara Cypress, is a small-sized conifer with a wide-based conical habit that develops flexible and dense branches. Their ends are characterised by pendulous, thread-like branchlets, giving a light and soft appearance to its foliage. The branchlets are covered with evergreen scales that are very bright, initially golden yellow and turning yellowish-green over time, bringing light to shaded areas and creating a beautiful contrast with darker conifers. Its slow growth and reduced size make it suitable for container gardening or small rock gardens. It is very hardy and thrives in normal, non-limestone soil that is moist and well-drained.

Chamaecyparis pisifera is a robust Japanese species belonging to the Cupressaceae family, which can reach a height of 45 m (147.6 ft) in its natural habitat. It is mainly used for making lacquered furniture and for the construction of numerous buildings such as palaces in its country of origin. It has given rise to numerous cultivars, classified into four groups, including the 'filifera' cultivars, with very fine branchlets.

'Filifera Aurea' forms a beautiful, flat-cone-shaped bush, measuring 3 m (9.9 ft) in height and 1.5 m (4.9 ft) in width, after many years. At the age of 10, it will reach approximately 50 cm (19.7 in) in height. Its slender and closely spaced branchlets are very flexible, slightly pendulous, and covered with golden yellow foliage that turns greenish-yellow in shaded areas. The juvenile leaves are acicular (linear, rigid, and pointed) and light, while the adult leaves are scale-like, pointed, and darker. The underside of these leaves shows a very distinct white band, corresponding to a row of stomata (the 'pores' on the plant's epidermis). Its bark, although not very visible, has a dark red colour and a fibrous appearance.

Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Filifera Aurea' is a small conifer highly appreciated in gardens for its unique habit and strong presence. It is ideal for planting in pots on a terrace and in rock gardens. Due to its slow growth and round silhouette, which requires no pruning, it pairs well with taller varieties with columnar, pyramidal, or narrow-conical habits. The visual qualities of dwarf conifers naturally shine in the design of a contemporary garden, which values the aesthetics of shapes, silhouettes, and textures over the fleeting beauty of flowers. These plants provide long-lasting structure to flower beds. They also mark pathways and border terraces, easily replacing trimmed boxwood. They serve as a backdrop for small roses, peonies, or tousled grasses with complementary temperaments. They can also be included in mixed hedges or paired with ground-cover plants such as aubrieta and ceraistes, as well as flowering shrubs. The key is to play with volumes and colours.

Planting and care

Plant from September to November and from February to June in light, fertile, well-drained soil, that is neutral or slightly acidic. A humus-rich soil or a mixture of ericaceous soil will be perfectly suitable. Choose a sunny or semi-shady location sheltered from prevailing winds. Soak the root balls well before planting. Add organic matter at planting and water generously in the first years. Apply a special conifer fertiliser every year in April and weed the soil in summer. This conifer does not require pruning.
