Description

Pinus heldreichii 'Aureospicata' is a compact Bosnian pine with a dense, conical, and open habit, distinguished by its subtly variegated yellow foliage. This very hardy conifer adapts to a wide range of soils and climates. It tolerates coastal winds and intense sunlight on a terrace well. Decorative year-round, it can be planted in beds, rockeries, or containers.

Pinus heldreichii (synonym Pinus leucodermis) is an evergreen plant from the Pinaceae family, native to the mountains of Southeastern Europe, from southwestern Bulgaria and Bosnia-Herzegovina through Macedonia to northern Greece and southern Italy. It grows at altitudes between 900 and 2,500 metres. In its natural habitat, this conifer reaches 25 to 35 metres in height with a trunk up to 2 metres in diameter. A champion of longevity, this conifer with its very neat conical habit can live for over 1,000 years.

The 'Aureospicata' variety was discovered in Germany at Hesse Nurseries around 1955. It stands out distinctly from the wild species due to its compact size and much denser growth. Its growth is slow, reaching 3.5 metres in height and 2.50 metres in width after 20 years, its age of maturity. This pine develops a conical habit, which can be accentuated with light annual pruning using secateurs. The Bosnian Pine belongs to the group of two-needle pines, with the needles paired on the shoots. They are dark green, quite long, stiff, and pointed. They form attractive, very dense brush-like clusters surrounding the shoots. In this variety, they are yellow at their tips. The brown bark is highly decorative, though patience is required to fully appreciate it due to the slow growth of this miniature variety. This variety does not flower or bear fruit.

Hardy to at least -20°C, this Bosnian pine thrives in most soils, from neutral to acidic and even slightly alkaline, with its only requirement being good drainage. It enjoys full sun but will tolerate partial shade in hot climates.

Bosnian Pine 'Aureospicata' adapts to all types of gardens, including small ones, and offers great satisfaction over the years. In containers, this conifer is perfect for enhancing a balcony or terrace long-term. In a garden, it works well in rockeries or beds, where it can be combined with other conifers or bushes. Its foliage highlights plants with light-coloured flowers and foliage. You can pair it with Berberis thunbergii 'Golden Carpet', a groundcover with bright yellow foliage, and plant dwarf conifers with a prostrate habit nearby, such as Juniperus squamata 'Blue Star', which boasts beautiful bluish foliage.

Planting and care

Plant Pinus heldreichii 'Aureospicata' from September to November and from February to April in ordinary, fertile, well-drained soil. It is not fussy about soil type, as long as it does not remain waterlogged. Choose a very sunny spot, or possibly partial shade in hot climates. Soak the root balls thoroughly in a bucket of water before planting. Add organic matter at planting time and water generously for the first few years, and during prolonged dry spells. In poor soil, apply a special conifer fertiliser every year in April and hoe the soil in summer. This very hardy conifer (down to at least -20°C) is not bothered by wind and tolerates drought quite well once established. To maintain or enhance the habit of this bush, you may carry out light annual pruning between May and June, shortening the young shoots. Pruning of twigs and branches, however, should be done from September to November.
