Description

The Lantana 'Chapel Hill Gold' is a recent variety, selected for its hardiness, which enables it to resist frosts of about -12°C, or even more, in drained soil, once well established. This small bush with a spreading habit offers a very lengthy flowering of golden yellow umbels, pleasantly fragrant, revealing lemony scents. They bloom from summer until the first frosts, on thick foliage, deeply veined, a very bright dark green, also fragrant, which will persist all winter in a favourable climate. These shrubs, usually reserved for mild climates, are cultivable in open ground in many temperate regions, provided they have winter protection. Elsewhere, they make excellent terrace or balcony plants to be stored in winter.

Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Central America, South America and South Africa, Lantanas, also known as Lantanier, Thousand Flowers, or Gold Basket are usually not very hardy shrubs, but are very floriferous and prolific. This 'Chapel Hill Gold' variety originates from the Lantana camera, through a natural mutation that appeared on a branch of the 'Chapel Hill Yellow' variety. Introduced to the market in 2008, it is part of a series of original and very floriferous American cultivars.

It is a shrub with a compact, bushy and spreading habit, with multiple quadrangular and thorny stems. It will reach about 60cm (23.6 in) in height and 80-90cm (31.5-35.4 in) in spread. Its foliage, aromatic when crushed, is evergreen in mild climates and in a greenhouse. It is composed of thick, rough, shiny leaves, a particularly dark green, dentate and slightly waffled, truncate at the base and narrower at the top.Its fabulous flowering begins in early summer: grouped in umbels of 4cm (1.6 in), the small tubular flowers form a round and colourful bouquet. Each one blooms in pale yellow, shows a small orange heart, then takes on a beautiful golden yellow tint at ripeness. They are fragrant, highly nectariferous and melliferous.

Up to Zone 8, the Lantana camara 'Chapel Hill Gold' can be planted in open ground and remain there all year round, as it tolerates quite severe frosts and is not particularly demanding on the nature of the soil. It can be associated in a dry, drained bed with exotic perennials such as Hesperaloe parviflora and Epilobium canum 'Western Hills', or other small flowering shrubs such as Helianthemum, carnation shrubs, lavenders, cistus, or bushy sages. In cold regions, it is grown in pots or planters. Lantanas happily mix with blue flowers, like those of Peruvian heliotropes, or Plumbago capensis. It can also be planted on the edge, in front of a bed of agapanthus, Callistemons or gauras in a dry situation.

Planting and care

Offer the lantana 'Chapel Hill Gold' a sunny situation all year round. While it can withstand heat and relative droughts in the summer, it needs coolness in winter. However, it is frost sensitive in cold regions where it will need to be stored away during the winter period; a bright cold greenhouse or an unheated veranda would be perfectly suitable. In March, proceed with the spring pruning to reshape and make plant thicker. In cold climates, as soon as the temperatures start to warm up, take the plant out gradually to get it used to the coolness and full sun. In the open ground, provide it with a very well-drained soil, fertile enough to support its flowering. If necessary, lighten your soil by incorporating coarse sand and light potting soil. Lantana camara tolerates the presence of limestone in the soil, but not excessively.

Often formed on a stem, the lantana camara is an ideal ornamental plant for terraces and balconies. During the summer, remove faded flowers as they appear. In October, bring plant inside, or unplant if grown as a greenhouse plant.

Lantana is known for its resistance to summer drought; however, its cultivation in pots requires regular watering to support flowering, more frequent in warm season than in cold season.
