Description
x Fatshedera lizei, the tree ivy, is an amazing hybrid plant that combines the shrubby habit of Japanese Aralia with the flexibility of common ivy. It adapts just as well to shady corners of the garden as to bright interiors or sheltered balconies. Its large, glossy evergreen foliage remains attractive all year round. In the ground or in a pot, trained or left free, it offers dense, decorative vegetation. This undemanding and hardy plant only dislikes excess stagnant moisture and dry winds.
× Fatshedera lizei is an intergeneric hybrid obtained at the beginning of the 20th century by the Lizé Frères nurseries in Nantes. A member of the Araliaceae family, its female parent is Fatsia japonica ‘Moserii’, and its male parent is Hedera helix.
This perennial plant has a semi-climbing shrubby habit. Left free, it reaches an average of 1.20m in all directions. When guided up a vertical support, it can climb up to 3m. Its decorative foliage is formed of large, glossy, thick, dark green leaves, deeply lobed (usually with 5 lobes), measuring up to 25 cm across. Growth is moderate to fast depending on growing conditions, and the plant readily produces offshoots from its base. In late autumn or early winter, it may produce discreet globose, creamy to greenish umbels, often sterile. Fruits are very rarely formed.
Hardy down to –15 °C, Fatshedera lizei can regrow from its base after a severe frost. Its root system is fibrous, shallow and non-invasive. Its stems are not equipped with climbing roots, so it does not attach itself to its support. This variety is easily propagated by semi-woody cuttings.
This tree ivy finds a place in shady spots in the garden. In a border, it can decorate the base of deciduous shrubs alongside other cool shade-loving plants such as hostas, ferns, heucheras and lungworts. Trained against a wall, it covers a shady façade or a fence in a small town garden. In a pot, on a terrace or patio, it offers an architectural presence, which can be associated with dwarf bamboos, sedges or dwarf Japanese maples. Growing in a large pot presents no difficulty.
× Fatshedera lizei can also be grown in a conservatory or in a bright room that is little heated in winter.

Planting and care
Fatshedera lizei can be grown outdoors in temperate climates, or in pots, both outside and indoors. It prefers slightly acidic soils, so it is advisable to enrich your garden soil with leaf mould. Lighten the soil with some coarse sand to improve drainage (beneficial in winter). Also, take care to plant it in a sheltered spot away from wind, preferably in partial shade. Water it in summer to keep some moisture at the base of the plant. In winter, do the opposite: ensure it is kept drier (though not excessively so) and protect it with a fleece if heavy frosts are forecast. When the leaves of your Fatshedera turn yellow in winter, it is often due to temperatures being too low; in summer, it is due to drought, so mist the plant with a little water.
You will need to tie it to a support, such as a trellis, to make it climb.
If you grow your tree ivy in a pot, shelter it from the severest frosts in a conservatory or a very bright room that is lightly heated: its foliage doesn't like dry air, so mist it once a week with lime-free water. Also watch for the appearance of scale insects or mites.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
