Description

The Acer griseum is a very unique maple tree is prized for its cinnamon brown bark, which peels off as it ages, and also for its yellow-orange tinted leaves in autumn.

Originating from China, this tree, which can reach a height of 10m (32 ft) (6-8m (19 ft - 26 ft) in our gardens), is also called "Paperbark Maple" or "Cinnamon Maple", and is hardy down to -30°C. It often grows in coppice shoots, with a spreading habit and thin, fragile branches. The deciduous leaves are opposite, with 3 elliptical leaflets, light green and then orange and red in autumn. In June, an insignificant yellow flowering is followed by winged fruits measuring 3 to 5 cm (1.2 - 2 in) long. The cinnamon brown bark of the Acer griseum peels away beautifully all year round, but is most noticeable in winter.

The Acer griseum, easy to grow, thrives in moist, fertile, well-worked and well-drained soil, in a semi-shaded position. Find a location sheltered from strong winds for it.

The slow-growing Acer griseum is stunning in the middle of a park. Enhance its beauty with small shade-loving perennials at its base to enjoy its unusual bark and vibrant autumn colours.

Tip: Prune every 3 to 5 years to balance the branches and maintain a good shape.

Planting and care

The Acer griseum should be planted in the spring or autumn in all fertile, deep, light and fresh soils in a semi-shaded position. Beware of strong winds. Maintain soil moisture during the first two summers after planting. Mulching can be beneficial to keep the soil cool. Pruning is necessary for young plants, and then every 3 years to balance the branches and maintain a good shape. Do not prune after December as the sap rises very early.
