My young albizia is coming out of winter. And with magnificent shoots starting. Can't wait to see what comes next. Delighted to see your field of plants as usual.

Description

The Albizia julibrissin Ombrella, also known as Silk Tree, is named after its beautiful dark pink, pom-pom-shaped flowers and distinct umbrella-shaped habit.

This beautiful shrub, originally from Persia, a region with a mild climate, has a light umbrella-shaped habit and can reach a height of 5m (16 ft 5 in). It is hardy up to -10°C and is known as the "Acacia of Constantinople". The shrub has graceful deciduous leaves that are compound and divided into very fine leaflets. The leaves are rounded and light greenresembling mimosa, and are around 20-30 cm (11.8 in) long. In July, the spreading crown is covered with dark pink pompoms, formed by a large cluster of stamens that look silky and solitary.

The Albizia julibrissin Ombrella grows in any fertilewell-drained soil in a warmsunny and protected position from cold winds. It adapts well to cooler climates if planted in a sheltered, south-facing location but does not tolerate winter humidity. In February, before new leaves form, prune dead, diseased or unwanted branches to maintain a beautiful shape. Severe pruning stimulates numerous vigorous shoots.

The Albizia julibrissin Ombrella is an excellent shrub to create shade and should be planted alone in a location to enjoy its gentle habit.

Planting and care

Albizia julibrissin Ombrella is preferably planted in early autumn in warmer climates or late winter in regions with cold winters. Resistant to -10°C (14°F), choose a warm location in full sun and shelter from cold winds. In late winter, between February and March and before the vegetation resumes, prune dead, diseased or unwanted wood to maintain a beautiful shape. Severe pruning stimulates vigorous shoots. It is naturally resistant to diseases and pests.
