Description
The Aralia cordata Sun King is a giant herbaceous perennial highly desired for its remarkable golden yellow foliage, perfect for illuminating shady areas. During the spring, young shoots emerge that can be blanched, similar to asparagus. Originating from Japan, these young shoots have a mild lemon flavour and can be consumed like asparagus.
The Aralia cordata Sun King is a beautiful plant with stems that can grow up to 1 metre tall (3 feet 4 inches). The bright leaves have large rounded leaflets that slightly dentate and persist throughout the summer. From this bushy clump, floral panicles with umbels of pretty small cream flowers appear from August onwards, giving way to black berries.
The Golden Aralia is relatively hardy and thrives in rich, loose, slightly acidic, cool, and well-drained soil. Ideally, the soil should not contain limestone. The plant prefers a semi-shaded position with a few hours of daily sunlight to keep its beautiful foliage longer.
You can plant the Golden Aralia alongside perennials with colourful foliage, such as heucheras, tiarellas, or hostas. It will also enhance blue to violet-coloured flowers such as cornflowers or money plants.

To ensure your plants grow healthy and strong, follow these simple steps. Begin by soaking your pots in water. Then, dig a planting hole that is three times the height and width of the pot. Fill two-thirds of the hole with loosened soil, tamp it down, and water generously. This will help your young plants establish better. Next, place your plant into the hole and level the soil. Tamp it down with your hand and water generously once again. Finally, during the first few weeks, water your plant regularly to keep the soil moist.
