Very pleased because planted last autumn, it has tripled in size this spring. It started late compared to the other bushes but has even flowered well, and I have left it with some berries so as not to exhaust it and to taste them. It looks superb!

Description

The Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliant' is a very decorative bush with dark green foliage that turns brilliant red in autumn, and large clusters of white flowers.

Hailing from the eastern United States, this beautiful 3m (9 to 10ft) tall and slightly suckering, hardy bush has a compact and upright habit. Also known as "Chokeberry", it bears deciduous, alternate, simple, ovate, finely dentate leaves that are dark green and turn fiery red in autumn, measuring 4 to 7cm (1.6 - 2.8in) in length. In May, the white flowers, sometimes tinged with pink, measuring 2cm (0.8in) in diameter, are abundant and nectar-rich. From September to Christmas, the bright red, edible fruits, with a taste similar to blackcurrants, are highly appreciated by birds.

The fast-growing Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliant' thrives in light, moist, humus-bearing, well-drained soil in a sunny location that is never scorching, or partially shaded. In shade and on chalky soil, the colours are less vibrant. It is naturally resistant to diseases and parasites.

The Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliant' can be used as a standalone plant, in informal and country hedges, or in borders, for a more spectacular effect, plant it in groups of 3 to 6 plants of the same variety.
