Description

This pair of small Mexican Orange Trees for borders and pots will delight lovers of fragrant terraces and small gardens. These small bushes that do not exceed 1.20 m in height not only offer a fragrant white flowering in spring and late summer, but also finely cut, aromatic and evergreen foliage in winter, green or golden depending on the plant. They can be planted in large separate pots, used in a small dedicated border, or integrated into a low hedge. These Mexican orange trees are drought-resistant in open ground and cold-hardy, down to at least -15°C.

This pair consists of:

1 Choisya x dewitteana Aztec Gold: a variety with leaves divided into thin golden leaflets, highly fragrant when crushed. Larger than those of the classic Mexican orange tree (Choisya ternata), its pure white star-shaped flowers are deliciously scented.

1 Choisya x dewitteana White Dazzler: a recent variety with a naturally rounded habit, very floriferous, with dark green, finely divided evergreen foliage. Also white flowering, with an orange fragrance.

Mexican orange trees thrive in in warm locations protected from cold winds. They thrive in loose, deep, fairly rich soils that do not become waterlogged in winter. They tolerate limestone well. In the south, avoid excessively hot exposures. To ensure that each plant has enough space, maintain a spacing of 80 cm between each plant.

Plant this pair near an entrance or a pathway to enjoy its delicate fragrance as often as possible. It will also be perfect on the terrace or balcony, planted in a large pot (at least 30-40 cm deep), regularly fed and watered. This pair can be the basis of a small informal hedge, accompanied by Caryopteris ('Heavenly Blue', 'Sterling Silver'), dwarf abelias, or buddleias for pots.

Planting and care

The Mexican Orange Blossom is best planted in spring in the north and early autumn in drier and warmer climates. It appreciates light, loose, well-drained soils. It tolerates the presence of limestone in the soil, but not in excess. Once established, after 2 or 3 years of cultivation, it is capable of surviving without watering in summer. It is resistant to -15°C, but quite sensitive during its early years, especially in heavy and humid soil: lighten your garden soil if necessary with a supply of river sand, gravel or volcanic ash: Choose a warm location, in full sun in cold regions, but partial shade in very sunny and dry regions. If it grows in the shade, under trees, its habit will be looser and its flowering less abundant. Shelter it from cold winds. In summer, during the first years, water regularly if necessary to help the bush establish itself.

Attention: Choisya is sensitive to attacks from Phytophthora, a fungus that attacks the neck of the plant when the soil is both warm and permanently moist; as a result, in hot regions, watering in summer should be spaced out to allow the soil to dry between two abundant water supplies. The Mexican Orange Blossom is an easy-to-grow plant that tolerates competition from the roots of large trees.
