Plant very well packaged and protected but poor handling by the delivery person who presented it to me upside down: the upper leaves are damaged. It's a shame because the plant is beautiful. I'm looking forward to seeing its progress ....

Description

Cordyline australis Red Star is a hardy perennial shrub with very decorative, evergreen bronze-red foliage consisting of long, narrow, arching leaves arranged in a rosette.

In summer, clusters of small white star-shaped flowers emerge, emitting a pleasant fragrance. The flowering is nectar-rich. The clusters stand at the end of long branches. It will not flower when grown in a pot. The flowers are followed by small decorative berries. This plant is also known as Dracaena australis Red Star. It can reach a height of 3.50 to 4m (11 in 6 ft - 13 in 1 ft) at maturity and a width of 1.50 to 2m (4 in 11 ft - 6 in 7 ft). The Red Star variety has a long lifespan and grows more slowly than the species.

Originating from New Zealand, Cordyline Red Star is hardy and resilient in mild climates, particularly coastal regions. It can only withstand temperatures ranging from -5°C (23 °F) to -8°C (17.6 °F). Therefore, it is best to grow it in a pot and bring it indoors to a cold greenhouse during winter. Cordyline Red Star will thrive in temperate gardens as well as exotic gardens. You can even grow it as a flowering hedge. It is often found in public gardens. In coastal regions, you can use it as a windbreak.

Planting and care

Cordyline australis Red Star thrives in the sun in moist and well-drained soil. It can withstand winds and sea spray, but needs shelter from cold, north winds. It appreciates high summer temperatures but dislikes waterlogged soils. When planting in spring, add some sand. In winter, protect the top of the bush with fleece. Cordyline does not require any particular pruning; just remove dried leaves and faded flowers. Only water in case of drought. It has few pests as it does not attract predators.
