Description

Corokia Cotoneaster is a spreading bush with tangled branches. This medium-sized shrub (it reaches up to 2.50m (8 ft 2 in) in height) has a bushy habit. During May, small fragrant flowers with five star-like yellow petals measuring 1 to 2 cm (0.4 to 0.8 in) in diameter appear, either solitary or in groups of four in auxiliary clusters. These yellow flowers are followed by red fruits in autumn.

This hardy plant (down to -10°C (14 °F)) from New Zealand is composed of small evergreen leaves in the shape of spoons. The dark green foliage measures from 0.5 to 2 cm (0.2 to 0.8 in) long. The Corokia Cotoneaster is best in direct sunlight for abundant flowering.

The Cotoneaster is often used as an informal or trimmed hedge, ground cover, on a slope or even for bonsai formation.

Planting and care

Corokia Cotoneaster prefers to be exposed to the sun and sheltered from cold, drying winds, but it can also be placed in partial shade. Plant it in a fertile and light soil, preferably moist but well-drained. In a mild maritime climate, this bush can be planted in an open area, either individually or as a hedge. Lightly prune the branches that compromise symmetry. If necessary, severe pruning can be done to limit growth. To prevent damage from cold weather during winter, protect the bushes by covering the soil around the trunk with straw or dry leaves.
