Description
Corylopsis pauciflora is a beautiful shrub that blooms in late winter in lovely clusters of delicately scented buttery yellow flowers that sway at the end of the still bare branches.

Also known as Buttercup Witch hazel, this spreading shrub has a width of about 2.50m (8 ft 2 in) and a height of 2m (6 ft 7 in), with deciduous, ovate, alternate bright green leaves that turn completely golden in autumn. These leaves resemble hazel foliage. In March, pendulous clusters of 3 to 5cm (1.2 to 2 in) buttery yellow flowers appear before the leaves.
Corylopsis pauciflora prefers acidic, moist, well-drained soil in partial shade and sheltered from cold winds, once planted it requires no particular care. Pruning is not necessary except to remove dead or diseased wood.
Corylopsis pauciflora pairs well with rhododendrons, hydrangeas, witch hazels, and any other plants that thrive in acid soil.

Planting and care
Corylopsis pauciflora is easy to grow if its location is well chosen. Plant it in spring in a mixture of garden soil and compost on a gravel bed for drainage. Mulch the soil with pine bark to maintain the necessary moisture and acidity for its proper development.
