Cotoneaster microphyllus

Cotoneaster microphyllus is a sturdy bush with small leaves, dark-green on top, grey underneath and white flowering followed by bright red fruits.

Originally from the Himalayas, this evergreen cotoneaster, reaching a height of 70-80cm (27.6-31.5 in) and 1.50m (4 ft 11 in) wide, has a compact and creeping habit. Its persistent leaves, 5 to 8mm (0.2 to 0.3 in) long, are dark green on top and grey underneath. In May, single, white, solitary flowers of about 1cm (0.4 in) in appear. In September, the round bright red fruits, 6mm (0.2 in) in diameter, with two stones, are highly appreciated by birds. They persist during winter on the bare branches, providing a beautiful decorative effect.

Easy to grow, the Cotoneaster microphyllus adapts well to any well-drained soil, even limestone, in a sunny or lightly shaded site, protected from prevailing winds. Not demanding, it will be satisfied with a balanced pruning to keep its shape in March and a mulch to keep the soil moist in summer.

Combine Cotoneaster microphyllus with ceanothus, roses, or saxifrages. Plant it as ground cover to fill a slope, rockery, or wall.
