Description

Daphne odora 'Aureomarginata' or fragrant daphne is a bush that owes its charm to its long and highly scented flowering.

In February-March, clusters of small light pink to purplish pink flowers appear. This spreading flowering offers a pleasant fragrance to the extent that it perfumes the garden within a radius of 20 m (65.6 ft)!

The foliage of Daphne odora is dark green, highlighted with a fine cream-yellow border. The evergreen leaves are 5 cm to 8 cm (2 in to 3.1 in) long. With a bushy and rounded habit, Daphne can reach a height of 1.20 m to 1.50 m (3.3 ft to 3.3 ft). A small-sized hardy evergreen bush with slow growth, it originates from China and Japan.

Whether in the ground or in a container, place it in a high-traffic area to enjoy its intoxicating fragrance, in shade or partial shade, in an acidic, humus-rich, and moist soil. You can grow it alongside heather as well as winter aconite, narcissus, or crocus.

Note: Daphnes are sometimes temperamental plants, whose cultivation can be delicate if the conditions are not suitable. They are reserved for experienced gardeners.

Planting and care

Daphne odora 'Aureomarginata' prefers a shaded to semi-shaded exposure. Cultivate it in a rather moist and acidic soil, without limestone. Apply compost on the surface every 2 years in spring. This Daphne does not require pruning. Wear gloves when handling it as the sap that oozes from it is irritating to the skin. Its only virus is Marssonina daphnes. Treat the daphne with a fungicidal in spring.
