Description
Diervilla sessilifolia Cool Splash is a variety of bush honeysuckle with sessile leaves, interesting for its pretty and variegated foliage of cream-white, its very fresh anise-yellow flowers, its modest growth and its non-suckering habit. This small deciduous shrub, which stays in place, has the advantage of enlivening shaded and somewhat difficult areas of the garden without requiring much care. It works wonders at the base of trees or as ground cover along a pathway. When grown in a pot, it will decorate a slightly shaded terrace.
Diervilla Cool Splash is a horticultural selection derived from Diervilla sessilifolia, a species native to the mountains of the southeastern United States. In nature, this shrub can be found on cliffs, along slopes, on riverbanks, and at the edge of woodlands. It belongs to the Caprifoliaceae family, just like honeysuckles.
The Cool Splash cultivar was selected in the USA. It has a bushy habit and does not sucker. Eventually, it will reach 1.2 m (3 ft 11 in) in all directions. Its foliage is composed of ovate, elongated leaves with pointed, slightly wavy tips that are directly attached to the branches (without petioles). The young spring leaves have a bronze colour, with the anise-green and ivory variegation appearing quickly. The foliage retains this colour until autumn, before falling. Its flowering, appreciated by pollinating insects, occurs in June. Its pale yellow trumpet-shaped flowers tinged with green are gathered in small clusters and bloom on the previous year's wood. This Diervilla even blooms in shaded areas and in the roots of trees where it particularly thrives. Very cold-resistant, it also tolerates dry periods in summer.
With its small size, accommodating nature, and bright foliage, Diervilla Cool Splash is ideal for small gardens and difficult-to-vegetate spaces. It is an ideal choice for filling in a woodland, a north-facing facade, or the base of a hedge. It will also fit well in a rose garden or in combination with shrubs with coloured stems such as bloodtwig dogwoods, for example. In flower beds, combine it with perennials for shade without mixing too many colours: lungworts, periwinkles, dead nettles, Epimedium, etc.

Planting and care
Diervilla sessilifolia Cool Splash tolerates shade but thrives in partial shade. Plant it in a well-draining soil, preferably humus-rich and slightly acidic although it is quite tolerant. This shrub is capable of withstanding dry periods but dreads very long, very dry and very hot summers. After flowering in summer, prune the inflorescences to maintain a compact habit from one year to the next. Every 3 years or so, at the same time, carry out a rejuvenation pruning by cutting shorter.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
