Bush received with some black spots on the leaves upon arrival (slight concern), but after 1 year in the ground, it is thriving and producing new shoots. Delighted.

Description

Garrya elliptica is recognisable by its evergreen foliage, which is dark green on top, grey and fuzzy underneath. Its ornamental interest increases in the middle of winter with the arrival of long pendulous catkins, which measure 20 cm to 25 cm (7.9 in to 9.8 in) long.

Originally from the west coast of the United States, it is hardy down to -12° C (10.4° F). However, it must be well protected from cold winds. Be vigilant regarding heavy frosts. Garrya elliptica adapts very well to an oceanic climate as it tolerates sea sprays very well. It will also adapt very well to a warmer urban environment that is better protected from cold winds.

To add interest to the garden, plant this bush in isolation or in free hedges in order to fully enjoy its atypical flowering.

This is a dioecious species: male and female flowers are not on the same plant. The male individual bears the attractive drooping catkins while the female plant bears shorter and erect cones which do not have the same visual effect.

Planting and care

Choose a suitable location for your Garrya elliptica as it will not tolerate being transplanted. It prefers a sunny spot but sheltered from cold winter winds. It is advisable to add sand to the planting hole. Water in case of severe drought during the first summer. Do not prune your bush excessively, as it will affect its flowering. You can optionally remove dead wood and some branches in April to rebalance the shape.
