Checkerberry
Beautiful young plant that will become a ground cover in a cool spot at the base of the hydrangeas. Incredibly fragrant berries just in the berry box.

Description
The Gaultheria procumbens is a dwarf evergreen bush used in ericaceous beds. The dense dark green foliage turns purple when temperatures drop in autumn, and lovely shiny berries turn red in late summer and decorate the bush until spring.
Originally from North America, the creeping wintergreen is common in the acidic understory of large coniferous and leafy forests in Canada. It is perfectly hardy, but cannot tolerate limestone. This bush remains very small in size, making it perfect for filling your ericaceous beds as a ground cover at the base of your azaleas, camellias, or hydrangeas, for example. Its evergreen foliage and small red bell-like berries fill the spaces left empty by other plants during the winter.
Be careful not to let children play with its attractive berries because, even though they have therapeutic benefits, an improper dosage of medicinal plants can be toxic.

Planting and care
Plant Gaultheria procumbens in acidic soil or in neutral soil, but be careful with alkaline soil as it is not suitable for it. It is a bush accustomed to shade or partial shade. Mulching with pine bark or needles will help retain the moisture it needs in the first year. After planting, water generously to eliminate air pockets, then monitor it throughout the first summer. In the long term, add ericaceous soil to its base every year. For pruning, limit the spread to the area reserved for your Gaultheria by cutting off any excess.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
