Description
Halesia carolina is a large hardy bush that bears numerous and beautiful white bells before the foliage appears.
Â
Called the Silverbell Tree, it has leaves that are 10cm (3.9in) long, ovate, alternate, finely dentate, medium green turning yellow in autumn. In May, numerous 2cm (0.8in) long, drooping, white four-petalled bells form along the length of the branches. They are followed by 4cm (1.6in) long winged fruits that are green.
Halesia carolina can reach a height of 6m (19ft 8in). It thrives in acidic, sandy, rich, moist, light soil in sunny or partially shaded positions and sheltered from winds. Pruning is not necessary except to remove any dead or diseased branches.
Also known as the Snowdrop Tree, enjoy its elegance as a standalone in a short grass meadow or combine it with rhododendrons, witch hazels, Styrax, camellias, or Pieris that have the same cultivation requirements.

Tips: Halesias appreciate a humid environment during their growth, shower the foliage of young plants after a very hot day.

Planting and care
Halesia carolina is planted in autumn in a fresh, acidic and light soil in a sunny or semi-shaded position. Mix 1/3 heath soil and 1/3 coarse sand with your garden soil. Water abundantly and mulch the soil with pine bark to retain freshness and moisture. Trim the shoots after flowering, just to balance the branches and remove dead or diseased wood. Shower the foliage after a very hot day.
